Vote by Absentee or Mail-in Ballot

In Pennsylvania, you have two options for mail ballots.

  • Mail-in ballot – Any qualified voter may apply for a mail-in ballot. You may simply request this ballot without a reason.
  • Absentee ballot – If you plan to be out of the municipality on election day or if you have a disability or illness that prevents you from going to your polling place on election day, you can request this ballot type, which still requires you to list a reason for your ballot.

Voting by absentee or by mail-in ballot, is easy, safe, and secure:

Step 1 Register to vote

Registered voters can apply online, by mail or in person.

Step 2 Apply

Once approved, your county board of elections will mail a ballot to you.

Step 3 Return your ballot

Return your properly sealed, signed, & dated, ballot to your county board of elections before the deadline.

Vote in-person using an Absentee or Mail-in Ballot

If you are registered to vote, you can vote in person before election day at your county board of elections or other designated location, using an absentee or mail-in ballot.

When you submit your absentee or mail-in ballot application in person, as long as the ballots are ready, you can receive your ballot at the same time. While you are there, you can complete and return the ballot. Ballots are usually ready 3 - 5 weeks before the election. Contact your county board of elections for more information.
